Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying Options

Stock option trading is something everyone wants to be involved in. I can see why. Options magnify the returns that an investor can make on a stock. However their power also works on the downside.

Are you ready to take on these additional risks? Before jumping in and buying options with both hands there are a few questions you should ask yourself first.

“Do you understand what they are and their risks?”

Understanding the stock trading basics is a must before entering the market. But options are a whole other ball park. It is important to understand them as well. Stock options allow investors to create both, higher profits and higher losses.

Before buying options make sure that you understand the risks and have a plan to minimize them.

“Are you making money?”

It is wise to have some prior stock market experience before investing money into stocks. Options are not some magical investment option that new traders should get into, but an advanced tool that can help experienced traders increase their returns.

Remember options are powerful, but they are not the Holy Grail. They only magnafy what you make or lose now. If you are constantly losing money by trading stocks then buying options is the worst thing you can do.

“Do you have a plan?”

You cannot buy and hold options. Have a strategy before you get in, that will be of big help to any trader. When do you enter? When do you exit, both when you are right and when you are wrong? These are questions you need to answer.

Most new traders will just buy a option on a stock that they heard from a friend of a friend was going to make a killing. And then they lose all their money and wonder why. Before entering make sure you actually have a plan.
